Google ranks businesses on Maps using three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher) and prominence (how well known and well reviewed you are). To rank higher, verify a complete Google Business Profile, choose the right primary category, collect genuine reviews every month, keep your name, address and phone the same everywhere, and link it all to a fast, local website.
For most local businesses in Chennai, Google Maps is now the front door. People search, look at the three businesses shown on the map, check the stars, and call or tap for directions. They often never scroll further.
The good news: getting into those top three spots does not depend on a big budget. It depends on doing a set of simple things properly and consistently. This guide walks you through them in the order we use for our own clients.
How Google decides who ranks on Maps
Google has said publicly that local results are based mainly on three factors. Everything in this guide improves at least one of them.
Relevance
How well your profile matches what someone searched for. Complete, accurate details and the right categories help Google understand what you do.
Distance
How far your business is from the person searching, or from the area they typed, such as "in Anna Nagar". You cannot change this, but you can make your location clear.
Prominence
How well known your business is. Reviews, ratings, mentions on other websites and your own website's strength all count.
You can read Google's own explanation in its guide to improving your local ranking.
Check your Google Business Profile score
Before you start, see where your profile stands today. Tick everything that is already true. You will get a score out of 100 and the three changes that will make the biggest difference, each linked to the step below that explains it.

Step 1: Claim and verify your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile (earlier called Google My Business) is the listing that appears on Maps and in search. It is free. Search for your business on Google Maps first: a profile may already exist, created by Google or a customer, which you can claim.
- Sign in with a Google account that belongs to the business, not a staff member's personal account.
- Enter your business name exactly as it appears on your signboard and invoices.
- Complete verification. Google usually asks for a short video of your premises, signage and tools, or offers another method.
- Add a second owner or manager so you never lose access if one person leaves.
"Smile Dental Clinic" is fine. "Smile Dental Clinic Best Dentist Velachery Chennai" is against Google's guidelines and is one of the most common reasons profiles get suspended.
Step 2: Choose the right categories
Your primary category has a big influence on which searches you appear for. Pick the most specific one that describes your main business: "Dental clinic" rather than "Health", or "Website designer" rather than "Marketing agency".
Then add a few secondary categories for other services you genuinely offer. Look at the top three businesses for your main search term to see which categories they use, but only choose ones that are true for you.
Step 3: Get your name, address and phone consistent
Google cross-checks your business details across the web. Your name, address and phone number (often called NAP) should be exactly the same on your Google profile, your website, Facebook, Justdial and every other listing.
- Use one format for your address everywhere, including the area name and PIN code.
- Use one main phone number. A local or mobile number your customers already know works best.
- If you serve customers at their location and do not have a shop, set yourself up as a service-area business and hide your home address. List the areas you cover, such as Adyar, Velachery and OMR.
- Never use a virtual office or a co-working address you do not actually work from. Google may remove the listing.
Step 4: Complete every part of your profile
Complete profiles look more trustworthy to customers and give Google more reasons to show you. Fill in everything that applies:

| Section | What to add |
|---|---|
| Description | Up to 750 characters on what you do, who you help and the areas you serve. Write naturally for customers. |
| Hours | Regular hours plus special hours for Pongal, Diwali and other holidays, so nobody arrives to a closed shutter. |
| Services and products | Each service with a short description and, where possible, a starting price. |
| Photos | Storefront, interior, team, work samples and products. Real photos beat stock images. |
| Website and booking links | Link to the most relevant page on your website, plus WhatsApp or a booking link if you have one. |
| Attributes | Options such as wheelchair access, parking, UPI accepted or women-led, where they apply. |
Step 5: Build a steady flow of genuine reviews
Reviews are one of the strongest signals for prominence, and they are often what makes a customer pick you over the business next door. What matters is a steady stream of genuine reviews, not 50 in one week.
- Copy your review link from your Business Profile and send it on WhatsApp after every completed job or visit.
- Make it easy: a short message with the link, sent while the customer is happy, works best.
- Reply to every review, positive or negative, within a day or two. Keep replies polite and specific.
- For a negative review, apologise, offer to fix it offline and share a phone number. Future customers read your reply.
Paid reviews, reviews from staff, or offering discounts in exchange for reviews break Google's policies. Google removes them and can restrict or suspend your profile, which undoes all your work.
Step 6: Post updates and photos every week
An active profile signals a business that is open and engaged. Once a week, add a post with an offer, a new service, a festival greeting or a recent project, plus a few new photos. It takes ten minutes and keeps your profile fresh for customers comparing options.
Step 7: Make your website support your Maps listing
Your website is a big part of your prominence. Google connects your profile and your website, so the website should clearly confirm where you are and what you do.
- Show your business name, address and phone number on every page, usually in the footer, exactly as on Google.
- Mention Chennai and the areas you serve naturally in your page titles and content.
- Create a separate page for each main service, so Google can match you to more specific searches.
- Add LocalBusiness structured data (schema) so search engines can read your details reliably.
- Embed a Google Map on your contact page and make phone and WhatsApp buttons easy to tap on mobile.
- Keep the website fast. Most local searches happen on phones, often on mobile data.
If your current website does not do these things, a website redesign or a focused new business website can make a noticeable difference to your Maps visibility.
Step 8: List your business on trusted directories
Mentions of your business on other trusted websites, often called citations, help Google confirm you are real and established. Start with the ones customers in India actually use:
- Justdial, Sulekha and IndiaMART (for B2B and manufacturers)
- Bing Places and Apple Business Connect, so you also appear in Bing and Apple Maps
- Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn business pages
- Industry directories and associations relevant to your field
Use the same name, address, phone and website on every listing. Quality matters more than quantity: ten accurate listings beat a hundred spammy ones.
Step 9: Track what is working
Your Business Profile shows how people find you and what they do next: calls, direction requests, website clicks and bookings. Check these numbers every month. If calls are growing, keep going. If people view your profile but do not act, improve your photos, reviews and description.
Common mistakes that hold businesses back
Swipe to see the full table
| Mistake | Why it hurts | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Keywords stuffed in the business name | Risk of suspension | Use your real-world name only |
| Two or more listings for one location | Splits reviews and confuses Google | Ask Google to merge or remove duplicates |
| Wrong or vague primary category | You miss your main searches | Choose the most specific category |
| Different phone numbers online | Weakens trust signals | Use one number everywhere |
| Ignoring reviews | Customers choose competitors who reply | Reply to every review |
| No website, or a slow one | Lower prominence and lost visitors | A fast, mobile-friendly local website |
How long does it take to rank on Google Maps?
For most Chennai businesses that follow these steps, clear movement usually shows within 6 to 12 weeks. Busy categories in central areas, such as dentists in Anna Nagar or interior designers on OMR, take longer because more businesses are competing for the same three spots.
Distance always plays a part, so nobody can guarantee you the top spot for every search across the whole city. What you can control is being the most complete, most trusted and most active profile in your area, and that is what wins most of the time.

Frequently asked questions
Is Google Business Profile free?
Yes. Creating, verifying and managing a Google Business Profile is completely free. You only pay if you choose to run Google Ads or hire someone to manage it for you.
Can I rank on Google Maps without a shop or office?
Yes. Businesses that visit customers, such as electricians, tutors or pest control, can set up a service-area business, hide their address and list the areas they serve.
How many reviews do I need to rank in the top 3?
There is no fixed number. Look at the top three businesses for your main search. Aim to match or beat their review count over time, with a steady flow of new reviews every month and replies to each one.
Why did my Google Business Profile get suspended?
Common causes are keywords in the business name, a virtual office address, duplicate listings or fake reviews. Fix the issue so the profile follows Google's guidelines, then request reinstatement from your Business Profile.
Does my website affect my Google Maps ranking?
Yes. Your website supports your prominence and relevance. A fast, mobile-friendly site that clearly shows your services, location and contact details, matching your profile, helps you rank.
